Bookstock Literary Festival 2017Bookstock Literary Festival is three days of workshops, readings, book sales, live entertainment, and much more! July 28 – 30, 2017 in Woodstock, Vermont.

The 9th annual Bookstock Literary Festival once again brings a host of poets, novelists, historians, journalists, memoirists, and other writers to our historic village for a weekend of literary appreciation. Nationally recognized authors will give presentations, workshops, and readings throughout the event.

The list of participating writers for 2017 reads like a who’s who of the literary world. Poets Benjamin Aleshire, Laura Foley, Pamela Harrison, April Ossmann, and Elizabeth Powell will be on hand. So, too will fiction writers Jean Hanff Korenlitz and Roland Merullo. Nonfiction writers Jabari Asim, Bruce Coffin, and Sarah Prager will also be in attendance – but that’s hardly the full compliment!

The 2017 Cooler in the Mountains Summer Concert Series

Cooler in the Mountains 2017 The Cooler in the Mountains Concert Series is 8 free outdoor concerts held throughout the summer at the Killington Resort Snowshed Base Area. The series regularly features big names from the national music scene and this year is no exception. July 15th through September 2nd, 2017.

Nothing says summer in the Woodstock, VT area like the Cooler In the Mountains concert series. 8 summer Saturdays of free top national acts on an outdoor stage at beautiful Killington Resort. Who could ask for more?

Concerts are scheduled to begin at 3:30pm and often run concurrently with other major events. The first concert, for example, occurs on July 16 in conjunction with the Killington Wine Festival.

Cooler in the Mountains concerts are free, festive, family-friendly events that draw thousands to the area. People come from all over to enjoy the festive atmosphere, great music, great weather, and happy crowds. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chairs to enjoy the show.

Killington Wine Festival Weekend 2017The 16th annual Killington Wine Festival Weekend is just weeks away. If you enjoy fine wine and the beautiful scenery of Vermont’s Green Mountains, you won’t want to miss it! Wine tastings, pairing dinners, concerts, and more: July 14th through the 16th, 2017.

The Killington Wine Festival Weekend has become one of the Woodstock region’s annual traditions. The event is held each year atop Killington Peak, one of Vermont’s tallest mountains. It’s also home to Killington Ski Resort, the largest ski and mountain bike resort on the east coast.

Attendees to the event enjoy fine wines from around the world, as well as Vermont-made spirits and specialty foods. 30+ wineries and wine suppliers will be on hand with wines ranging from crisp, light whites to deep, full-bodied reds – and everything in between!

Step Back In Time With A Visit To Skunk Hollow Tavern!

Skunk Hollow Tavern in Hartland Four Corners, VTA visit to Skunk Hollow Tavern in Hartland Four Corners, VT is a bit like traveling back in time, complete with excellent pub fare!

Skunk Hollow Tavern, built circa 1790, is an authentic, country tavern. This popular destination is a diverse venue offering both pub and restaurant settings. You would be hard-pressed to find a more authentic, less touristy place to drink or dine than Skunk Hollow Tavern.

The tavern’s building is one of the oldest in the area, with construction that reflects early methods used by the area’s first settlers. Skunk Hollow Tavern is built into the hillside, its face towards the day’s best sun. This method of construction helps to insulate the building from the worst of the weather.

Sometime after the building was first built, an English basement was added. An “English basement” is one partially buried and having a separate entrance from the rest of the structure. At Skunk Hollow Tavern, this basement is the Tavern Room. Upstairs is the more formal dining area. The modern kitchen offers both a full menu and a pub menu that can be enjoyed in either space.

Skunk Hollow Tavern has been feeding folks since 1985 but the building has been a lot more than that over the last 200 years. Since 1790, it has been home to a butcher shop, a cobbler, a milliner, and a tea room. There are even rumors that it was once a car wash and, on dark, moonlit nights, you can sometimes still hear the ghostly gurgle of the drains.

The tiny, 200-year-old, crossroads tavern is probably eligible for the State Historical Registry. The worn wooden floors, crude bricks, and narrow construction simply ooze history and atmosphere. The surroundings elevate the experience, making your burger or a pint of one of the many regional craft beers they have on tap that much better.

Bike Vermont For A Good Cause: Long Trail Century Ride 2017

The Long Trail Century Ride 2017The Long Trail Century Ride is a recreational bike ride starting and ending at Long Trail Brewery in Bridgewater Corners, VT. Saturday, June 24th, 2017.

The purpose of the annual ride is two-fold. First and foremost, getting out into the quiet beauty of Vermont as a celebration of the start of summer. The Vermont countryside, with its quaint barns, rolling hills, cow-specked fields, and covered bridges is so lovely this time of year. Getting out in it, first hand on a bicycle can be especially rewarding.

The Long Trail Century Ride also raises funds for Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports. In fact, one of the registration requirements is a minimum fundraising amount of $100. Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports is Vermont’s largest nonprofit organization committed to providing sports and recreation to people with disabilities. Long Trail Century Ride’s goal is to raise $225,000 or more for this wonderful organization.

Visit the Mill at Simon Pearce in Quechee, VTSimon Pearce’s flagship store in Quechee, VT boasts a magical setting. The restored mill overlooking the Quechee Covered Bridge from the Ottauquechee River falls offers a showroom, glassblowing demonstrations, and a renowned bar and restaurant.

In our last post, we detailed a driving tour of covered bridges near our Woodstock area B&B. In the post, we mentioned visiting The Mill at Simon Pearce, which is directly adjacent to the Quechee Covered Bridge.

Now, you’re likely familiar Simon Pearce stores. They dot the east coast with offerings of stylish glassware and home decor, all handcrafted by American artisans. If not, Simon Pearce is an Irish-American artisan and entrepreneur who learned his trade in Kilkenny, Ireland. After running a highly successful glass business in Ireland, he relocated to the United States in the late 1970’s and established the Simon Pearce company.

Getting out on a covered bridges driving tour in Vermont is a wonderful way to spend the day and, in many parts of the state, incredibly easy, too.

F. H. Gillingham & Sons – One Of Vermont’s Oldest General Stores

F. H. Gillingham & Sons Vermont's Oldest General StoreWoodstock, VT’s F. H. Gillingham & Sons celebrates their 131st anniversary this year. This makes them one of Vermont’s oldest general stores still under management by the same family! Take a step back in time with a visit to this wonderful, historic store!

Vermont is lucky in that it has a number of contenders for “oldest general store in Vermont,” many still managed by descendants of the original owner. That’s certainly the case here in Woodstock. F. H. Gillingham & Sons has been operating downtown since it opened in 1886! The family that started the business still owns it. Best of all, the store still retains much of its late 19th/early 20th century feel.

F. H. Gillingham & Sons is located in its original building at 16 Elm Street, here in Woodstock, VT. The business is part general store, part history museum. Entering the store is like stepping back in time, complete with creaking, wooden floorboards worn smooth and dark by over 100 years of customers and clerks.

Sample Maple On A Tour Of Woodstock, Vermont’s Sugarbush Farm!

Last post we discussed maple sugaring time and the Maple Madness event that takes place in Woodstock near the end of March. Another great way to celebrate spring’s sweet harvest is with a visit to a family farm known for its pure Vermont maple syrup?

Sugarbush Farm is a 550-acre, fourth-generation family farm located right here in Woodstock, VT. The farm has been run by the same family since 1945. In 1995, they were honored by the American Cheese Society with a blue ribbon for the best smoked cheese in the country.

Celebrate Vermont’s “Sweet Season” At Maple Madness In Woodstock

Celebrate Vermont maple sugaring time at Maple Madness in Woodstock!It’s maple sugaring time! Come celebrate everything maple in Woodstock, VT during the annual Maple Madness event. March 25th and 26th, 2017.

Vermont’s maple sugaring season typically runs from late February to April. Soon the days will begin to warm and the sap of the sugar maples will begin to flow. Sugaring time!

Once that sap begins to run, it slowly drips out of the taps that have been driven into the trunks of sugar maple trees. Out of the taps the sap flows, down into the buckets that hang so patiently from the taps. The buckets are regularly checked by their sugarmakers and, when they’ve gathered enough sap, collected and taken to a sugarhouse.

At the sugarhouse, this sap is cooked down, creating a lot of steam that rolls out of the houses. Consequently, the air of the countryside around a sugarhouse is laden with the delicious smell of pure, Vermont maple syrup! Heavenly.
